What is an ITIN

A federal tax ID
for filers without an SSN

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number is a nine-digit IRS number for people who can’t get a Social Security Number but must meet US tax filing requirements. It’s used on federal returns and required for the foreign spouse and dependents claimed on a joint or head-of-household return. IRS ITIN overview.

If you’re searching for an ITIN application near me, an IRS Certifying Acceptance Agent San Jose authenticates your passport in office, reviews your Form W-7, and submits a Certificate of Accuracy — original never leaves the office. Our sister office TrustPoint Disability and Legal Services handles disability and legal-document needs.

How it works

Four steps from walk-in
to mailed application

About 30 minutes total. You leave with your passport, W-7 copy, and tracking receipt.

1

Book and bring documents

Schedule online or by phone. Bring your unexpired passport (or two acceptable secondary IDs) and the federal return your ITIN attaches to.

2

Verify ID in office

As your CAA we authenticate your passport on site and prepare a Certificate of Accuracy — original never leaves your hands.

3

Prepare and sign W-7

We complete Form W-7, choose the correct reason box for your case, attach your return, and review every line before signing.

Quinnie Do, founder of Fingerscan Digital and IRS Certifying Acceptance Agent, San Jose CA

I founded Fingerscan Digital in 2019 to give Bay Area families a trusted local place for IRS services — no mailing passports, no chasing the IRS.

As an IRS-authorized Certifying Acceptance Agent, I verify your passport in person, prepare your W-7 with Certificate of Accuracy, and submit to the IRS Austin ITIN unit. Your originals stay with you.

I personally handle every first-time ITIN application — foreign spouses under §6013(g), dependents on a federal return, F-1/J-1 students with 1042-S, non-residents filing 1040-NR, and IRS exception cases. We speak English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

Frequently asked

Common ITIN application
questions, answered

Do I qualify for an ITIN?
If you have a US tax filing requirement and aren’t eligible for a Social Security Number, you qualify. Common cases: foreign spouses on a joint return (§6013(g)), dependents on a US return, non-residents filing 1040-NR, F-1/J-1 students with 1042-S withholding, and foreign owners of US rental income.
How long does it take to get an ITIN?
Processing typically runs seven to eleven weeks from when the IRS receives the packet. Filing season (January-April) and incomplete documentation are common causes of delays. We mail with tracking.
Can I get an ITIN to open a US bank account?
Generally no. Per current IRS rules, opening a bank account is not on its own a qualifying reason. The W-7 requires a federal tax purpose — a return, IRS exception, treaty claim, or third-party reporting.
Can my spouse and dependents apply at the same visit?
Yes. Family applications are common — especially §6013(g) joint return filers. Each applicant needs their own ID and signs their own W-7. Save $50 per additional.
Do I need to file a tax return with my W-7?
In most cases yes. The IRS only issues an ITIN when there’s a federal tax purpose, so a current-year return is normally attached. Exceptions: treaty benefits, 1042-S, 8288-A, and specific third-party reporting.
