What Is Nursing Fingerprinting?

Nursing fingerprinting San Jose is a fingerprint-based criminal history check required before California issues, endorses, or renews a nursing license. The DOJ runs the state check, the FBI runs the federal check, and your board pulls the results into BreEZe.

Title 16 CCR §1419 requires every active-status RN renewal to have valid prints on file dated on or after January 1, 2014. Prints older than that — or missing entirely — will hold your renewal until new prints clear. Initial-license applicants must file the BreEZe application first, then come in for Live Scan.

FAQ

Common Questions

Do I need to file my BreEZe application before getting Live Scan?
Yes for initial-license applicants. The BRN requires your application and licensing fee to be submitted through BreEZe before your nursing fingerprinting San Jose appointment. Renewal applicants don’t need a new app — just the prints if your renewal notice says they’re required.
How long until my prints show up in BreEZe?
Live Scan posts to BreEZe within about 72 hours. Name mismatches — common with hyphenated or maiden names — can add a week of manual review. We help you upload the completed form under “Submit Additional Documents” if results stall.
What if my fingerprints get rejected by DOJ?
Free reprint at our office — no additional DOJ or FBI fee. After two rejections, the BRN automatically requests a name-based search (no action from you). We’re trained on hyperhidrosis, age-thinned ridges, and dry skin, so first-pass clearance is the norm here.
Will my old prints from before 2014 still count?
No. The BRN requires fingerprint submissions dated on or after January 1, 2014. If you were last printed before that date, you’ll need a new Live Scan before your next active renewal. Renewals to inactive status don’t require new prints, but reactivating later will.
I’m an out-of-state RN moving to California. What do I do?
File the BRN Licensure by Endorsement application in BreEZe. Once you’re in California, our nursing fingerprinting San Jose service replaces the FD-258 mail-back — results in 72 hours instead of weeks.
What’s the BVNPT mail code, and why does it matter?
BVNPT mail code 13425 tells the DOJ which licensing board should receive your results. Wrong mail code = your prints go nowhere useful. We verify the code on your BCII 8016 form before capture so the right agency gets your file.
Can my nursing school or hospital book a group session?
Yes. We do mobile group fingerprinting for nursing programs and hospital onboarding teams of 10+. We come to your campus, set up a station, and submit every applicant before we leave. Email info@fingerscan-digital.com with cohort size and dates for a per-applicant rate.
