What is FBI apostille

Authenticating an FBI background check for use abroad

The FBI Identity History Summary apostille is the federal authentication that turns your background record — sometimes called a “rap sheet” — into a legally recognized document in over 120 Hague Convention countries. The seal is issued by the U.S. Department of State, Office of Authentications in Washington, D.C.

Without an FBI background check apostille, the report has no legal weight outside the United States. Foreign embassies, employers, adoption agencies, and immigration ministries require this federal seal before they’ll process a visa, residency, work permit, marriage license, or adoption file overseas.

Two parts to the process: getting the document itself, then getting it authenticated. Most providers only handle one of those steps. Our service handles both under one roof.

Common questions

FBI apostille questions
answered straight

How long does an FBI apostille really take?
Standard processing at the U.S. Dept of State runs about 5 weeks. Expedited service runs about 14 business days. The federal government controls the seal step itself — we fast-track submission and pickup, but don’t set the turnaround. For the bundle, the Channeler step adds only a few hours since results are often within minutes, then we authenticate the FBI report directly.
I live in another state — can you still apostille my FBI report?
Yes. Your FBI background check is a federal document, apostilled only by the U.S. Department of State, so your home state does not matter and there is no in-state version. Order online from anywhere in the U.S., upload your digital FBI report or mail the printed copy, and we submit it for federal authentication and ship the authenticated report back to your address or to an embassy.
Do I need an FBI apostille or a state-level apostille?
It depends on the document. FBI background checks are federal, so they require a federal apostille from the U.S. Dept of State. State-issued documents (birth certificates, marriage licenses, diplomas) get a state-level apostille from your state’s Secretary of State. If your destination requested an FBI report or “police clearance” specifically, you need this federal authentication service.
What’s the FBI Identity History Summary apostille for?
It’s the official authentication of the FBI document listing any criminal history record information from federal databases — sometimes called a “rap sheet” or “FBI clearance letter.” Foreign visa, work permit, adoption, and residency applications use this document as proof of clean federal record. The federal seal is what makes it valid abroad.
Can I use a digital FBI report for the apostille?
No. The U.S. Dept of State requires an original printed copy with the embedded security features for the authentication step. PDF-only or screenshot copies are rejected. If you only have a digital version, request a printed copy — or use our bundle, which produces a printed copy ready for authentication.
How recent does my FBI report need to be?
Most foreign embassies require the FBI report to be issued within 3 to 6 months of submission abroad. Some are stricter (UAE often wants 90 days). If your existing report is older, the bundle is usually faster than waiting for a new standard FBI request.
Will my FBI apostille be accepted in non-Hague countries?
No — non-Hague countries require embassy legalization instead of an apostille. After the federal authentication, the document goes through the destination country’s embassy or consulate for an additional stamp. We can advise on the right path during your appointment.
Can you mail my apostilled report directly to the embassy?
Yes — we can ship the authenticated FBI report directly to a foreign embassy, consulate, employer, or any address you specify. Just provide the destination at the time of your appointment or email it to us before pickup.
What if my FBI report shows a record I want to clear up?
If the record is incorrect, you can request an FBI challenge before the authentication step. If the record is accurate but old or sealed, the authentication still applies — the foreign agency reviews the report content. For legal advice on records or expungements, our partner TruPoint Legal handles consultations.
