Is There an FBI Channeler Near Me? What You Actually Need

Short answer: you cannot visit an FBI channeler. Channelers are data-processing companies approved by the FBI to transmit fingerprint submissions electronically. They do not operate public counters and they do not take your fingerprints. What you actually need is a fingerprinting location that submits through a channeler — which is what we do at 434 Blossom Hill Road in San Jose.

Why searching for a channeler near you leads nowhere

If an employer, licensing board or foreign consulate told you to obtain an FBI Identity History Summary, you may have read that it goes through an FBI-approved channeler. The natural next step is to search for one nearby. That search rarely produces a useful result, and the reason is simple: a channeler is a processing company, not a storefront.

The FBI publishes a list of approved channelers. Look at it and you will find businesses that operate submission systems, not walk-in offices. Most have no public counter at all. You cannot make an appointment, sit down, and have your prints taken by a channeler.

What actually happens, step by step

  1. Your fingerprints are captured in person. This has to happen at a physical location by someone trained to roll or scan them. We do this in our San Jose office, usually in about fifteen minutes.
  2. The prints are transmitted through an FBI-approved channeler. The channeler is the electronic pipe between the collection site and the FBI. We submit through our channeler partner — you never deal with them directly.
  3. The FBI CJIS Division runs the search and produces the Identity History Summary, the document most people mean when they say “FBI background check.”
  4. The result comes back to you. On the electronic route this is often within minutes, and rarely longer than a few hours.

Fingerscan Digital is a fingerprint collection site. We are not an FBI-approved channeler and we do not claim to be one. We work with a channeler partner to submit your prints, which is how nearly every walk-in FBI fingerprinting service in the country operates.

Do you need the electronic route or an FD-258 card?

Electronic submission through a channeler is the faster path and returns results the same day. Some agencies will not accept it. Foreign consulates, out-of-state licensing boards and certain federal programs specifically require a physical FD-258 fingerprint card instead.

Bring the instructions you were given and we will tell you which route applies before you pay for anything. Getting this wrong is the most common reason an application comes back rejected.

If the report is going abroad

An FBI Identity History Summary used outside the United States usually needs an apostille from the U.S. Department of State — a separate federal step after the report is issued. Many people discover this only after receiving the report and lose weeks restarting. If you already know the document is for a visa, residency application or overseas employer, say so at the outset and we can run both stages together. See FBI apostille in San Jose for how that works.

Common questions

Can I go to an FBI-approved channeler in person?
No. Channelers are electronic processing companies, not walk-in locations. They do not take fingerprints and most have no public office. You need a fingerprint collection site that submits through a channeler, which is what we do in San Jose.
Is there an FBI channeler near me in San Jose?
Not in the sense you are probably looking for. There is no channeler counter you can walk into in San Jose or anywhere else in the Bay Area. What you need is a fingerprinting office. Ours is at 434 Blossom Hill Road, open Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 6 PM on a walk-in basis.
Do I have to use a channeler at all?
For an electronic FBI background check, yes, though not directly. The alternative is mailing a completed FD-258 fingerprint card to the FBI yourself, which takes considerably longer. The channeler route is what makes same-day results possible.
What do I need to bring for FBI fingerprinting?
Valid, unexpired government-issued photo identification. If the requesting agency gave you a form or a reason code, bring that too. If you were told you need a physical FD-258 card, bring the card if they supplied one — we stock blanks if they did not.
How much does it cost?
FBI background check fingerprinting is $120. If you also need the report apostilled for use abroad, the combined package is $450 and includes a $20 discount on the fingerprinting. Call (408) 766-3528 if you are unsure which you need.
