Trilingual Help
Multilingual passport renewal assistance in San Jose — helping South Bay families navigate the State Department online and DS-82 paper renewal paths
Two renewal paths

Online renewal vs. DS-82 mail-in
— we help you pick the right one

The State Department launched a fully online renewal system that lets you keep your passport at home. Most South Bay residents qualify but don’t know about it.

Most popular

Online Renewal Path

DS-82 Mail-In Path

Original passport mailed in
  • Mail your original passport with the application packet
  • Pay State Dept by check or money order
  • Printed 2×2 photo attached to the form
  • Routine 4–6 weeks — or expedite +$60 (2–3 weeks)

The State Department now rejects AI-edited photos

Effective January 1, 2026, applications with AI-altered photos — including most phone editing apps, beauty filters, and background-replacement tools — are automatically rejected. Our passport photo San Jose service uses raw camera capture only: no AI, no smoothing, no edits. State Dept compliant on the first submission.

Online renewal eligibility

Do you qualify for the
keep-your-passport path?

The online renewal system has strict eligibility rules. We check all of them before you pay any State Department fees.

All of these must be true to renew online:

  • You are age 25 or older (not 16+ — this is a common confusion)
  • You are a U.S. citizen or non-citizen U.S. national
  • You are physically located in a U.S. state or territory when you submit
  • Your most recent passport was a 10-year passport issued between April 2011 and April 2017
  • You are not changing your name or sex marker during this renewal
  • You are not traveling within 6 weeks — online is routine service only, no expedite
  • Your passport is in your possession, undamaged, and not reported lost or stolen

Don’t qualify? The DS-82 mail-in path is open to most renewing applicants who don’t fit the online criteria. If your passport was issued before age 16, was lost or damaged, or you’re changing your name without a marriage certificate or court order, you’ll apply in person with Form DS-11 instead.

Common questions

Passport renewal San Jose
frequently asked questions

Do I really not have to send my passport in?
If you qualify for the State Department’s online renewal, yes. The passport stays at home — it gets electronically cancelled after submission, but never leaves your possession. The portal is at opr.travel.state.gov. If you don’t qualify, the DS-82 paper path does require mailing your old passport.
How much does the whole renewal cost?
Online: $245 total ($100 service + $15 digital photo + $130 State Dept book fee). DS-82 mail-in: $250 total ($100 + $20 printed photo + $130). Add $60 for State Dept expedited or $22.05 for 1–3 day delivery. We never mark up State Dept fees.
Why do you charge $15 for digital and $20 for printed photos?
The digital photo is a raw camera-captured JPG sized to State Dept online specs — no editing — emailed for upload. The printed photo is the same image printed twice on photo paper as a 2×2 inch passport photo for the DS-82 form.
Can you submit my application for me?
No — and any company that says they will is operating outside federal rules. The State Department requires applicants to sign and submit their own passport application. Our role is preparation: eligibility verification, photo, form review, multilingual walk-through.
Why are AI-edited photos getting rejected?
As of January 1, 2026, the State Dept’s adjudication system detects AI-altered photos — backgrounds, beauty filters, lighting corrections, smoothing — and rejects the application. Most phone editing apps trigger this. Our studio uses raw camera capture: AI compliant on first submission.
What if my passport was issued before April 2011?
You don’t qualify for the online path, but you almost certainly qualify for the DS-82 mail-in path. Same $100 service fee, $20 printed photo, $130 State Dept book fee.
Bạn có cung cấp dịch vụ gia hạn passport tiếng Việt không?
Yes — full passport renewal Vietnamese assistance. Quinnie walks you through every State Dept screen and form field in fluent Vietnamese. Có — chúng tôi cung cấp hướng dẫn gia hạn passport bằng tiếng Việt tại San Jose.
How long does the State Department take?
Routine processing is 4 to 6 weeks. Expedited (DS-82 only, +$60) is 2 to 3 weeks. Mailing time is separate. Online renewal is routine-only — no expedite available through that path.
