FBI Apostille for China
work Z visa, done in San Jose

China’s work (Z) visa requires an apostilled FBI background check. Since China joined the Hague Convention in November 2023, a federal apostille now replaces the old embassy legalization — a step many services still wrongly insist on. We fingerprint you, pull the report through an FBI-approved channeler partner, add the federal seal, and coordinate a certified Chinese translation.

What you actually need

What an FBI apostille for China is

For a China work (Z) visa or work permit, authorities ask for a federal criminal record check — your FBI Identity History Summary — with an apostille, and usually a certified Chinese translation. A state background check is not accepted.

An FBI background check apostille is the certificate that makes the federal report valid in China. Because the report is a federal document, it requires a federal apostille issued by the U.S. Department of State — a California state apostille won’t be accepted.

What changed: China joined the Hague Apostille Convention in November 2023, so the apostille now stands on its own and the old embassy legalization step is gone for mainland China. We get the FBI report, apostille it, and coordinate the Chinese translation — the same way we handle every FBI apostille in San Jose.

Why applicants choose us

The Bay Area’s one-stop FBI apostille office

Most FBI apostille San Jose services are mail-only, and many still push the outdated embassy step. We handle the whole chain in-house and apply the current rule — with help from our partner TruPoint Legal for clients who need extended legal-document support.

One Stop, One Receipt

We apostille FBI reports in-house: walk-in fingerprinting, federal authentication, and coordinated Chinese translation.

Best Standard Price

$200 standard is well below market — competitors charge $295 to $475 for the same federal apostille.

Current on China’s Rules

We apply the post-2023 Hague rule: a federal apostille, not the costly embassy legalization outdated services still push.

Common questions

China work visa apostille questions
answered straight

Does China require an apostilled FBI background check for a work visa?
Yes. Most China work (Z) visa and work-permit applications need a federal FBI Identity History Summary with a federal apostille. A state or local police check is not accepted.
Do I still need embassy legalization for China?
No. Since China joined the Hague Apostille Convention in November 2023, a federal apostille is sufficient for mainland China — the old embassy legalization step is no longer required. Many services still list it; it is outdated.
How recent must my FBI report be for China?
Most Chinese authorities want the FBI report issued within six months of submission, counted from the FBI issue date. Requirements vary by employer and local bureau, so confirm with your sponsor before you submit.
Do I need a Chinese translation of my FBI background check?
Often yes — many Chinese authorities require a certified Chinese translation of the apostilled FBI report. We coordinate a certified Chinese translation so your packet is complete.
Do I need a state apostille or a federal apostille for my FBI check?
Federal. Because the FBI report is a federal document, it needs a federal apostille — a California state apostille won’t be accepted. A state-level apostille on an FBI report is rejected.
Does my FBI report need to be notarized for China?
No. The FBI Identity History Summary is already federally certified, so it does not need notarization — and adding a notary seal can actually cause the apostille to be rejected.
How long does an FBI apostille for China take, and what does it cost?
The standard apostille is $200 and takes about 6 weeks. Expedited is $350 and takes 14 business days, without fingerprinting. The bundle is $450 and includes walk-in fingerprinting, also 14 business days. Any required translation and government fees are quoted separately.
Can you apostille my degree for the China work visa too?
Yes. Your university degree and teaching certificate usually need a state-level apostille for the Z visa, which our apostille services handle alongside your federal FBI report — one packet, one place.
